Welcome to Cinemalarky!

I like movies.

Earthshaking news, I know. In a world where everyone who’s ever been to a theater has a movie blog on WordPress and a movie podcast on The iTunes and a movie webzine on Geocities (that’s still a thing, right?), I decided to start a movie blog. But hell, I like movies and I like to write. And so here we are. Howdy!

I used to write a lot. A long time ago, I wrote for, and even edited, a couple smallish sites that I really enjoyed working for. I was even cashing checks from The Onion for a while back in the day when I was a freelancer for the (now sadly defunct) Denver branch of the AV Club. Writing led to my greatest opportunities: attending film festivals as a member of the press, interviewing celebs, even hosting a horror film festival. And I guess that this blog – in a way – is a test for myself to see if I still remember how to convert the bizarre non-sequiters and random movie quotes floating around my brain into the written word.

For almost two years, I was the Creative Manager (or Programming Director) of the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Ashburn, Virginia. I was primarily responsible for creating and facilitating movie-related events and promotions and – for all intents and purposes – chose which movies we screened. It was up to me to decide what movies would sell and what special tie-ins to dream up to get butts in seats. It was hard as hell and the best job I ever had. It was, as they say, la belle vie. *pompous French phrase alert*

But life moved on and so did I. And since then, I’ve fallen quite a bit out of that MOVIESMOVIESMOVIES lifestyle that I used to enjoy so much. My wife and daughter and I live in Chicago now and I putter away at a M-F, 9-5 office job. Not much time for movies, not much time for being “seen” or “known” amongst the circles of writers and podcasters that I follow and admire. It’s been a long year and a half since I left the Alamo and all of our friends in Virginia and I miss it and them very much.

But last I checked, I ain’t dead, I can still watch movies, and I’m still reasonably coherent. So I have resolved to get back into the swing of things by watching more movies, writing more things, and being more active and involved in the things that I enjoy. I hope to be here often, with lots of thoughts, maybe some regular-ish columns, a little of this, a little of that. So come away with me, movie buffs. Yeah, everyone has a movie blog, but this is MY MOVIE BLOG and so I trust you understand that this is a MOMENTOUS ANNOUNCEMENT.

See you around.
